Steven Bergwijn heaps praise on Jose Mourinho’s management

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has heaped praise on manager Jose Mourinho and revealed that the Portuguese played a key role in luring him to the north London side. The Netherlands international joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven during the winter transfer window and he managed to make an instant impression with a goal on debut against Manchester City as the club sealed a 2-0 win.

He has since added another two goals to his tally for the capital outfit and looks to have already become a favourite among the Spurs faithful. In a recent interview covered by the club’s official website, Bergwijn said that Mourinho has a good relationship with the players and appreciated his man-to-man management skills.

He told: “The image people have of him is exactly what he wants. That makes it unique, I think. Mourinho just wants to win, he radiates that in everything. At the same time, he loves his players. Before the transfer was completed, he called me, we facetimed. He wanted to know everything about me and of course when I would come and when I would train for the first time. Mourinho has a lot of confidence in me, which is partly why I felt at home so quickly, I think.”
Spurs have resumed their season after the coronavirus shutdown with a draw and win against Manchester United and West Ham United respectively. With the results, they have jumped to within one point off the fifth spot, which could be sufficient for Champions League qualification, suppose Manchester City’s European ban is upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Still, their prospects of making the European competition are dependent on their rivals dropping points. Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers ahead of them have games in hand against Sheffield United and Bournemouth and Spurs will be hoping that they will drop points in their respective encounters.
