Kuyt Believes Roma Can Win
Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt is of the opinion that Roma will be able to win the Italian Serie A title this season. The Dutch international is currently playing for Turkish club Fenerbahce. They recently took on Roma in a friendly match that finished has a 3-3 draw. After this exciting match, Kuyt says that he saw enough quality within this Roma team to challenge Juventus for the title. Juventus have won the league title for the past three seasons, but they have recently lost the charismatic manager Antonio Conte to the Italian national team.
Even though they have appointed former Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri, this is widely seen to be a major disadvantage for the current champions. Under the guidance of Allegri, Milan have won the league title only once although they were suffering from numerous financial problems unlike Juventus. Roma pushed Juventus all the way to the title last season and they appear to have strengthened even more during the summer. Rudi Garcia has been able to consistently maintain the performances during the pre-season friendly matches.
Kuyt has not won the league title in England despite spending six years with Liverpool, but he has seen the stuff of champions within Roma and he expects the team to challenge.
“Roma are a strong team. They’ve kept all their best players and have brought in some more high-profile ones. I, like everyone else, respect Totti so much. It’s amazing that he can still play at such a high level. It would be perfect if he could win the Scudetto with Roma this season – and I think they have a good chance. It was really disappointing to see him miss the World Cup. But I am convinced that that disappointment will make him even stronger,” said Kuyt. Roma have Kuyt’s international teammate Kevin Strootman in the squad.
